Als ich Elliott Lieb bei einem seiner Besuche gefragt habe, ob er mir beim Verständnis seiner Papers zur Thomas-Fermi Theorie helfen kann, antwortete er nur “read my book”. Aus diesem Grund ist dieses Buch auch in der Rubrik “mathematische Physik” und nicht bei der reinen Mathematik angesiedelt. Es behandelt alle wichtigen Dinge, die man etwa bei der Quantenmechanik großer Systeme braucht.
Unvergessen ist mir auch eine Passage aus dem Vorwort, die ich hier zitieren möchte:
“According to Walter Thirring, there are three things that are easy to start but very difficult to finish. The first is a war. The second is a love affair. The third is a trill. To this there may be addad a fourth: a book.”
